Wyoming Airsoft, Eye Protection on Let'er Buck!

I've been looking and noticing that many locations have a set of "rules" of which they follow. I suggest we start discussing a set of rules for which we can all abide by and follow to make it easier when hosting skirmishes and operations. The following is not ment to be used literally but is an example done by USA Airsoft in Colorado.

THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE.

USA Airsoft / Airsoft Colorado Ruleset

1) Equipment
1.1 Goggles - All player must wear a full sealing with a retaining strap goggles or mask. "Shooting glasses" are not allowed. “Sensei” style, wire mesh goggles are allowed if they are full-seal. Wire mesh goggles must be able to be shot repeatedly with no distortion.

1.2 Face/mouth protection - All players under the age of 18 must wear face / mouth protection in addition to goggles.

1.3 FPS Limits - All Airsoft gun replicas must adhere to the FPS limits listed below.
All guns except for bolt action Sniper Rifles have a limit of 400FPS with .20g BB's. Single shot "bolt action" sniper rifles have a limit of 3.33 J (447FPS with 0.36g bb's)

1.4 AMMO - No metal bb are allowed

1.5 Magazines - No high cap or "winding mags" are allowed. Player may use any and all standard, Real cap or Mid cap magazines. Players using support type weapons (see below) are allowed to use Box Mags

1.6 Grenades - Commercially available hand grenades may be used, no home made devices and NO Pyrotechnic devices. Grenade must physically expel bb's and the bb's must strike the player in order to count as a hit. Absolutely NO smoke grenades, pyrotechnics, open flames, or similar dangerous devices are allowed.

1.7 Support Weapons - True support weapons or Squad Automatic Weapons such as M60, M249, RPK are allowed to use Box Magazines. These weapons must be true representations of a support weapon. An AK-47 with a long barrel does not count as a RPK. A M4 with a Box mag is not a support weapon.

2) Hits
2.1 BB hits - A bb's striking a player anywhere on their body or their gear (except for "gun hits") counts as hit. The player will immediately call out "Hit" loudly and make it apparent that they are hit, the player will also pull out a "dead Rag" / Red rag and visibly place it on their head.
[exception: a game host may chose to use "black book" rules at an event, black book rules will be explained prior to play]

2.2 Gun Hits - a BB striking the weapon that is currently being used by the player does not count as hit against that player

2.3 Friendly Fire - being hit by a fellow team player or "friendly" still counts as a hit as mentioned in 2.1

2.4 Bang Bang Rule - A “Bang, Bang” call can only be given if a player has an opponent 100% dead-to-rights from a blind or rear arc within 15 feet of the targeted player. This is done to ensure safety for all players, and is not to be used as an offensive tactic. If a player yells “Bang, Bang!” at you, you are dead, period. It is not to be used against multiple players at the same time and cannot be used tactically

2.5 Grenade / Claymore Hits - A bb must physically hit a player for a grenade, claymore or similar device to count as a hit. Players will also take into consideration that if a device goes of near you and bb's are striking everywhere around you, you most likely where hit even if you did not feel it. Most of these devices are low powered for safety.

2.6 Rockets - Neft Pocket vortex or similar devices fired from a shoulder launcher or M203 device have a 10 foot kill radius from its final resting place.

3) Player Conduct

3.1 No Cussing - Player will refrain from cussing and inappropriate language.

3.2 Calling hits - Do not call other players hits, simply mind your own hits. If there is a player that not calling their hits please bring it to the attention of one of the game hosts.

3.3 Listen to the game hosts / staff - A player will listen to the directions of the game hosts, player will also give their attention to a host when they are speaking to the group.

3.4 If goggles are off, Mags are out of your gun

We should consider coming up with something similar for all Wyoming Airsoft members to use and follow during operations / skirmishes that are relatively close to rules from other locations. That way its easy to to transition from one location to another.

Voice your stance on this as well as concerns and opinions. Please be specific and provide alternative's to things you do not like.

I specifically like the rule of Mid to low cap magazines being used rather then Winding High caps due to almost all major events require just that. Also I've never been a big fan of sealing goggles/masks. but recently I've decided to go to full face sealing goggles myself. Something to consider when reading over this example and deciding on our own rule set.

Thanks.

I like the rules except for the no hi-cap and the 400fps limit. The mags should be by event and rules set out by the people doing the event. A lot of people have hi-caps that came with thier rifle and may not have the money right away to get midcaps, also as most of us know getting mids that function well with your gear can be difficult, expensive, and time consuming. As far as the FPS goes most of us have rifles right on or over that 400 threshold. Some of them are stock. What do we do with them, not everyone can run out and buy a new rifle on a whim to fit in the 400 fps deal. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

I think a good FPS rating should be 450 FPS for Rifles. 500 for Snipers. Honestly anything over 450 is way over powered and you cannot safely fall into the "Safety Kill" Range of 20 feet. I know alot of Guns are 400 out of the box and most shoot 400 FPS and under with .2 grams. I personally dont feel the need for anything over 350 FPS. Your not honestly getting any further performance by that 50 FPS. plus your gear box and internals will wear out alot faster at that higher FPS. Just my two cents here.

As to the Mid/Low's I agree with not every one can get them, what I'd like to see happen is we start moving towards them over all. Not a "Hey every one will use low/mid caps right now!" We set a dead line, for people to shoot at. I use Star Mags for my M4 and they work great and you can get a box of 10 for under 50 bucks these days. I just know from looking up not only USA/Colorado's but other rule sets else where very many places are going to just this sort of set up.

Now Granted you dont have to follow these rules, but if we start having Wyoming Airsoft Association sanctioned events the rules we come up with will be what we apply and use. and its alot easier to go to other locations and events when your rules are close to theirs.

Just my two cents.

Yeah that sounds fair. I like the mid/low caps personaly. I have had a hard time finding ones that like to feed in my KWA, but every STANAG magazine I have used has worked fine, go figure. Also for the guys using the G&G's and R4's these use slightly different mags than almost every other manufacturer and we have has some issues with feeding those as well. I agree that realisticly 450fps is probably as high as you want to go for an "officialy Santioned" Wyoming airsoft event and I dont think to many people will have a prblem with that. I don't and when your a just goofing with your buds or practicing you can use whatever you want.

This is all good stuff. I personaly perfer hi-cap mag, when your in knock down drag out most of the time you forget to wind your mag untell it dry fires. FPS, 400 is just right w/ .2g ammo for AEG 500 cap for snipers w/.4+ ammo. As for eye wear high inpact shooter glasses are fine, 9 out of 10 times if someone is going get you in the head it's because of the pump of the moment.

I agree with Lex... we need to have established rules\regs for sanctioned events. The 450/500 is especially good for us. We purchased a chrono so we can check out our weapons... (we can help check other participants\members if they wish). I am all about safety as well as a good time...nothing will ruin a good skirmish faster than a member with an injury. I realize we are new to the airsoft gaming scene (contrary to some beliefs), but I know enough to realize the dangers of these weapons, and we don't want to see anyone injured. Regs will make it safer for everyone!

The hi-cap mag issue is not really a problem for us as we are into realism as much as possible.( The hi-caps are fun too!) I feel that squad weapons (SAW, M-60 etc.) should be allowed to use hi caps as in the "steel world" they are supported by ammo carriers and very seldom run out anyway.

Maybe we could have a "meeting" to discuss a final set of rules in the near future... but my vote is "as written" by Lex in this post. They seem to cover everything very well!

The eye protection area is very important to us. I don't like goggles either but one of our members received an eye injury when a ricochet got him during a training mission. We've seen first hand the issue with eye injuries, and I'll be wearing goggles. It should be an important consideration for any participant when deciding on goggles or glasses... if a round sneaks in the side of the glasses and directly strikes your eye... IT COULD PERMANANTLY BLIND YOU!!! Not something to think about after the fact!!! Yea, the glasses are cooler and more comfortable...the goggles are safer! Go home in one piece...you're family and friends will thank you!

This is just my opinion. Our team has operational safety regs that closely resemble the rules here. We want to have a good time, and hope that everyone else does too. But it can be done safely if everyone realizes the importance of the rules and follows them!!!

Sounds like a pretty comprehensive list of things.

I am pretty comfortable with the "450 for AEGs" rule idea. Consider that most higher end AEGs will come with either an m-110 or m-120 spring in them, and you will realize that 400 FPS may be too low.

As for the Hicaps, If it is just a weekend skirmish, use whatever you want. As long as nobody cares. I like having the Hicaps at certain times. I usually do not care about any kind of historic accuracy or anything like that. I just want to go sling BBs and get some time in REGARDLESS of what I am carrying. Of course for any official game, then YES, Limit the Hicaps.

I do have a big tear with the GOGGLES/GLASSES. I remember in paintball when the first few sets of goggles came out. It was an outrage to tourney players. Most people wore safety glasses (we called them FOLDERS). There were numerous injuries. Paintball places FAR more energy on the target with any hit. Airsoft is a different beast all together. Much lighter BBs.

I personally play with a nice pair of conforming safety glasses. Very comfortable and light. I have never had a moment where I feel like my eyes are in danger from my eye protection choice. I also do not like to wear goggles. They are bulky and the straps squeeze my enormous head. Painful!!! I have never personally seen an eye injury from airsoft, regardless of what the players are wearing. What I have seen far more (almost every time I play) is tooth injuries. People getting their teeth chipped and broken.

I would like to think that as an adult, I can choose to wear any form of impact protection that I want for my eyes. Of course you could place some requirement on this like "must be ASTM safety certified eye protection" or something liek that. I would think that as long as we are playing in a public venue, it is up to the player to decide what to wear. If we are ever on private land, then it could be up to the landowner. I could also see any big tourneys or games requiring a full facemask just like paintball. I will agree that goggles are usually safer but the safeness is overkill for me and detracts from the game.

Just my pennies,

WM

What's the opinion on AEG Sniiper weapons

I have a couple points:
1. The U.S. Military states that for any soldier on active patrol or "outside the wire" in ANY theatre of operations must wear balistic rated safety glasses or goggles. Both Wiley-X and other top rated (henseforth expensive) manufacturers have developed shooting style glasses that conveniently come with removable full seal inserts. They are the same size as glasses, provide the same comfort, and "look as cool as shooting glasses". Granted they are pricey but worth it. I have a pair of the Wiley-X's and have excerted myself while wearing them. They do not fog and do not limit your vision. I hate goggles but am willing to sacrifice my immediate comfort so I can remain playing airsoft wherever I go.
2. I (and others who I play with) play airsoft for the realism factor involved. Hi-Cap mags tend to aggrivate more and more people the more I read and play with you all. Hi-Cap mags seem to encourage "spray and pray" mentalities and degrade the realism. How many weapons do you all know of that have the Hollywood "neverending mags".... how many of you have critisized these movies for that? I'm just saying for formal hosted play that the rule works.
3. Does anyone have any gum?
